Serving the Community

Small churches often find themselves without sufficient resources to engage in the ministries that they might wish to do. Nevertheless, several of our ministries are long-standing, and our community has expressed a longing to do more.

Each month Christ Church contributes financially to local nonprofits that serve the local community.

Recipients have included our neighboring not-for-profit health center, Bay Community Health, as well as Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Maryland Fuel Fund, the Lighthouse Shelter, The Blue Ribbon Project, Anne Arundel County Library Foundation, the Arundel Rivers Federation and the South County Assistance Network (SCAN), a food pantry hosted at nearby St. James.

Hunger in our community weighs heavily on our minds and we find ourselves most focused on nutrition programs.

Backpack Buddies

Christ Church West River has engaged in the Backpack Buddy program in cooperation with other local churches and non-profits for over six years. In cooperation with Anne Arundel County Public Schools we provide food and snacks for weekends during the school year. Besides packing bags each week, Christ Church provides fresh fruit for all 45 children being served under this program.

Light House Shelter Sandwich Ministry

On the first Thursday of each month volunteers gather in the Parish Hall kitchen to prepare sandwiches for the Light House Shelter. Sandwiches, water and snacks are delivered to the shelter to provide lunches for 80 guests.

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home

We have a long-standing relationship with the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, and in recent years it has been reinforced by the ministry of several of our youth. Twice a year we have a drive to enrich the lives of veterans living at Charlotte Hall by supplying items from their wish list and also donating funds for other needs. We’re so proud of our teenage members who have stepped in to keep this ministry alive and well.

The Pamela T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Pam’s daughter, Rayniece, is establishing a scholarship in her mother’s name. The scholarship will begin in 2026 and will go to a Senior at Southern High School who is pursuing education in public or health and human services. We are so pleased that our sister, Pam, will be remembered this way and will live on through this scholarship. Christ Church will hold and administer the scholarship funds, in partnership with Rayniece, who will review nominees and award the annual winner. Contributions are, of course, always welcome.
